The harsh cold surounded him. The snow reflected a lot of light sent on by the sun. It wasn't very bright, but it was the region's 6 months of light, so it wasn't ever really dark. The sun didn't help much. It was still really cold, even to those bundled up with double digit layers of clothes.
It was quite easy for a wizard to keep warm in this weather though, as long as they were very careful as Remus Lupin was. He kept his wand in his hand, casting incendio every once and awhile and the heat coming from his wand would warm him up, if it was inside of his jacket, which was flame resistant.
So why was he in such an unhospitalable place such as this? Well he and a few others were to investigate a happening which took place when these transfers came. Remus didn't know the details of why, since these transfers were just students from the United States, though he guessed that there was something more there. Remus had been sent with a few others, though he was quiet as they walked to the pole, since a magnetic field prevented apparation.

Although she was supposed to be at the school keeping and eye on everyone else, Tonks figured that if Kingsley filled in for her for a while she'd be alright. She didn't see the point in working with Death Eaters at points anyway. Well, anyway, back to the story at hand. Being in Antarctica was freezing, Tonks had lost some feeling in her fingers even though she was wearing about twelve plus layers of clothing. She wanted to shout that there was nothing here and that they should all just turn back and give up even if it would fail Dumbledore.
Tonks' hair looked worse than ever, it was still limp and mouse colored but now it looked frozen at the front. Being where they were did not help when you were depressed, with the person your depressed about, and when your secret was discovered by none other than Snape.
Tonks slipped on a piece of ice and started to slide along the path made by those ahead of her. She yelped as she fell and curled up incase she hit any ice blocks on the way. 'Stupid field of magnetism, stupid heart, stupid ice, stupid me, stupid Dumbledore, stupid penguins, stupid cold, everything here is just stupid!' she thought as she slid. At one point she thought she had hit an ice block but a quick looked showed it to be a person. 'Dang it... should've known my clutzieness would do this to me..' she smacked her frozen forehead.

Remus was at the lead, so when something happened behind him, he had to turn around and look, but in this case it to know what happened he didn't need to turn around as Tonks hit him. Remus almost fell, and stumbled to the point where he was just centimeters from falling. He turned around to see Tonks stopped by himself, and smiled slightly, before catching himself and frowning.
He offered his hand to help her up as he spoke, saying, "Come on, up. Be careful Tonks." He didn't say anymore knowing her feelings and how he had broken her heart. But he knew that he couldn't allow those feelings in her to rub off on him... if they hadn't already, because while she didn't care how dangerous he was, he did, and he knew from the start he probably couldn't be with another for these reasons, no matter how much James and Sirius tried to set him up.
But he cared about those he could call friends: Kingsley, Mad-Eye, and yes Tonks. The infatuation she had for him, Remus assured himself, would disapate hopefully, and things could return to normal. That would be for the best, no matter what he felt, and no matter what she said or felt. Remus just hoped that she was going to be ok, and not do anything rash. [/blockquote]

Tonks simply looked up at him, she wasn't sure what to say so she averted her gaze. Her frozen face was already red and now there was a heat wave over it that didn't help with her red face but did help hiding the embarrassed blushing. She took his hand to stand up and started to slip again, so she gripped his sleeve and held on in case she fell again.
"I'm sorry, it's all this stupid ice! I keep falling and that's the fourth time I have!" she wailed trying not to stomp her foot, "I wish we could apperate there it'd be easier and I wouldn't have to deal with all this ice."
With out the cold and the ice, Tonks would've been happy to just be with everyone even if it was for something Dumbledore was having them do. She would've preferred somewhere warmer but apparently to discover where these kids were from, they had to go to Antarctica.
"It just had to be the most remote, cold and darkest place on earth didn't it? Why couldn't we go some where warm like Africa, or Mexico! Aren't the transfers from America anyway? Why can't we go there to get information?" Tonks asked, she really didn't see the point of being here if there was just ice and a magnetic field around where they needed to go.

As she took his offered hand, he could see her face turn slightly more red. Her grip felt extremely cold, and she seemed really cold herself. Remus sighed and smiled again; again catching himself and forcing the smile back.
"You're freezing Tonks," Remus said quickly, "Here." He pulled off on of his many layers of clothes, and a scarf he had used to cover his face to keep it warm, and he offered it to her. He was warm enough anyways.
"I know, just take it slowly, if you need to, you can stay up here and I can help keep you up," Remus offered, since he couldn't think of much else. The magnetic field was interfering with most of the magic, even his fire, so sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't so there was an option to use a charm to make the footing any better.
"I don't know why we're here, it doesn't make sense really, but I trust Dumbledore and he said to, so I am here," Remus replied after thinking about it for a little bit. He would trust Dumbledore with his life, he would trust Dumbledore with someone else's life, which was a bigger gamble to Remus than his own.

Tonks sighed and shook her head, "Keep your scarf, if I need to I'll ask but for right now I'm fine." At the same moment she thought, 'And I'm the one he rejected, and now he's trying to be nice... don't I feel special? Psh..'
Even if that was a total lie she pulled it off pretty well, she kept her head in her face mask and hood to where she could hardly see and ended up kicking ice for the thrid time that day. Cursing she pulled her foot back and held on to Lupins sleeve again.
"I'll kick more ice so I'll just hold on." she said biting her lip with her eyes closed. If you took a closer look you'd see ice on her eye lashes making her eyes hard to keep open, "Either that or I'll end up falling again and none of us want that to happen right?"
She chuckled faintly and kept going making sure to scold her self internally for being stupid but what ever helped her sleep at night right? Right, because every girl's dream is to be rejected several times. 'Just my luck that he'd come on this too, if Kingsley hadn't shown up to have me go I would've still been sitting there guarding Hogwarts, watching the gates for nothing to happen.' she thought pulling her hood strings tighter around her face.
"I can't see a thing..." she mumbled through the little hole she had.

Remus sighed internally and put the scarf back on. Still must be bitter, or sad about it. But he knew it was all for the best. He didn't want to talk about it anymore, so he pushed their last fights away from his mind and just let himself keep going. Funny how his feelings creeped up to him at the worst moments possible. He just wanted to be nice, to try and make-up for it, but nothing he did worked. Remus was quite exhausted of ideas of how to make-up for it without caving in. He knew that she wouldn't ask for anything from him at this point, a jacket, a scarf, or anything like that, even if she was extremely cold. Her and her persistance...
"No that would be unfortunate if you fell," Remus replied keeping any sort of emotion from intruding on his face. It was getting late, they might have to stop soon, and their goal was a little less than a day away. It wouldn't be too bad to spend the night, but it was really odd since he was used aparating everywhere any good distance away.
"Don't worry I'll be your eyes for you, I guess," Remus replied, "If you can't see anything of course."

Tonks started to shiver more and more. Temped, she was about to ask if they could ptich tent and stop for the night but she didn't want to seem pushy. After a little bit longer she could hardly stand the bitter cold. she was shaking so much she thought the ground beneath her was shaking. She could feel her hands moving back and forth faster than they would in the London cold.
She gave in, "Okay too cold, lets pitch tent and sleep. I need to reheat my fingers toes and the rest of me." she was about to shout and her eyes were wide so it was obvious she'd broken the ice on her lashes, "Please? I think we all might want to sleep, we've been walking for what feels like forever."
She was shaking still and her teeth were chattering making her look like a super chilled penguin with a brown tuff of hair. Her face was still red and the scarf on her face was her old Hufflepuff one but it had kept her warm there so she figured it'd work here too, apperently she was wrong.

Remus turned to her at her request to pitch a tent, and he sighed and hid a smile behind his scarf. He could see and feel her shaking from the cold. It was probably late enough, though it was hard to tell the time since the sky was always lit this time of year.
"Ok, let's set up camp for tonight," Remus replied taking his wand and a tent from a bag he had. It took a couple of times for it too work, but the tent set itself up at the fifth wave of his wand. Remus offered her to go in first.
"We'll light a nice fire and get warmed up," Remus stated feeling quite cold himself, but probably not as cold as Tonks seemed to be. He felt sorry for her and her coldness, and wanted to help her out, by summoning a few more coats, but it probably wouldn't work very well. Right now he looked like a penguin in the amount of layers he was in, of course wearing a scarf and some earmuffs to keep his face warm.

Tonks was still shaking majorly when she stepped into the tent, she was glad there was magic or it'd take forever to set up tents. There was a fire place in the middle of the area, a stove by it along with pots and pans, there were beds on both sides of the tent too. Tonks fled toward one of the beds and but her hat down on it. "That bed's mine." she panted, still shaking quite a lot. Her hair was still limp and short and the ice didn't help her looking even more sickly than she did. She started to take off her gloves but her fingers were a bit numb at the moment, "I really hope I don't have frost bite.."

Remus entered after her, and waved his wand a few times, though the first few times nothing happened. The last time it finally worked. It was quite annoying with it not working all the time. At least now the tent would be shielded from the cold, since he used the Imperious curse. The heat would stay in and everything. It was quite warm in here. Remus peeled off his layers of clothing to where he was wearing only a sweatshirt and a pair of jeans, at least were visible.
Remus claimed his own bed which was the farthest from Tonks' claimed bed as possible. He went to the kitchen and looked at the supplies they had.
"Do you want anything, we have just about everything, and yes, it'll be hot," Remus asked across the room to Tonks. Good thing they didn't pack ice cream or it wouldn't be eaten. Remus would first attempt to cook with magic, but if it failed he would just do it like a muggle would, which wasn't too hard since the machines did most of the work.

Tonks took off the twelve sweaters and the parka she was wearing, then eleven of the twleve pairs of sweats she wore so she'd have one pair left, some of the socks. She flopped down on her bead and curled up under the blankets.
"It's fine, I'm not hungry anyway." she said, "I'm cold and tired really so I think I'll just take a nap. Wake me up when... well just wake me up soon okay?"

"Whatever makes you happy," Remus mumbled back but still audible by Tonks across the room, pulling some meat out of the fridgerator unit. He always like himself a good steak, rare was usually best, though he started cooking this one so it was a good medium rare. Remus waved his wand a couple of times before giving up and pulling the spices out of the cabinets manually. He realized that wizards were quite lazy when it came to things like this. But he didn't really dwell on that and he started placing spices in measured amounts over his steaks.
As Remus cooked, his thoughts turned to Tonks, probably sleeping, or maybe awake across the tent. It was just heart-breaking to see her so sad about him. He was thinking about what harm would come if he actually agreed to it, though at this point he wouldn't be sure she would come to actually accept him. Then his reason for rejecting her in the first place came around his head.
He could cause her pain, especially around full moons, and he doubted things like him could have children, like Tonks probably wanted. Remus was much older than her, and seemed like a student 'loving' a teacher and would soon go away. He didn't want for something to happen between them that would make things even more awkward being around her. He was afraid of loosing someone he would come to care for. Remus was a stupid old coward, who had faced death, faced danger, faced unspeakable horrors every full moon, and yet he couldn't face the chance he could loose a friend if he complicated things.
The sweet fumes of the meat drifted into his nose, and he knew it was ready. That wasn't too bad right? It really wasn't that much more time, and this way he had the expierience of actually cooking like a muggle. He wouldn't choose it over magic, as he managed to do with cooking some mashed potatoes. Remus served his meal to himself on a nice large plate and walked over to a table by the fireplace and began eating to himself.
He wondered when he would wake up Tonks, if she wouldn't wake up herself by the time he decided to. Right now he enjoyed the quiet alone time, eating by the fire with no one approaching him or giving him reproached looks as he recieved in... well everywhere others were around except the Grimmauld Place.

Tonks had her eyes closed but couldn't fall asleep because she had thoughts constantly buzzing through her head. At one moment her she was thinking that she needed to get up appologize and accept a meal but at the same moment a thought of the opposite meaning was buzzing that she was right to just lie here and cry to herself making it seem like she sleeping. Oh, how she wished that this would all just end and that she'd get the answer she wanted. Sadly she knew that this was all for the best and that she should let it play out the way it will. If they were meant to be, he wouldn't have said no, and if they weren't she would've gotten the no she did get.
She mouthed the words, 'I'm sorry' and let more tears roll off her face. Tonks almost felt the need to get up and appologize, but then again, the contradicting thoughts said that she would just break down in more tears and it wouldn't help her any.
Trying to laugh at herself, for being so stupid but she couldn't find it in herself to laugh. Lord, she hadn't laughed since he'd said no. To get further on that point, that was around the time when her powers were suffering. The change happened almost over night, in a period of one night her hair went from bubble gum pink to mouse brown and no matter how hard she tried she just couldn't change it back to pink. Even getting angry didn't help, she couldn't change her hair to red or any color, it just stayed brown. By that time her patronus had changed as well. Seeing her patronus really hurt and when Harry had asked if it was too.
Tonks really wished she could go back to being happy why did she have to be the one getting hurt emotionally? She had beat herself up about that. Each time she thought about it she looked at herself in a mirrior and said to herself, "YOU FIGHT DARK WIZARDS FOR A LIVING!! GET OVER REJECTION!!" but she just couldn't bring herself to it..
She smelled the meat and covered her nose from all the spices being added, 'if he thinks that's good I might have to get up and make him another one because that one smells disgusting...'

Remus took his first bite of his steak and winced at it. Wow he was a terrible cook, but it was something to eat, so he continued. At least the potatoes were good, and since Remus was so into meat, he didn't complain. Remus peered over to Tonks supposibly sleeping over there, but he could tell she was awake. He wasn't sure if he should say something to her, or not.
"Still awake aren't you?" Remus called making his decision before his mind could counter it. It was quite warm in the tent right now, and hopefully would stay that way, depending if his charm didn't break from the stupid magnetic field preventing magic. Remus simply continued to eat, thinking of himself, but not only himself, but everyone else. Arthur, Molly, they both said that he should just get over his self-doubt and be a brave old man. Well he wasn't about to give in to their peer pressure, no sirree.
Remus finally decided it was too strong of a taste to his steak and set it down on a nearby table. He leaned back in his seat and placed his arms behind his head and peered at the fire. Fire was normally something destructive, but as of now was something so peaceful to Remus, calming him down and making him feel at peace. That peace was nice, since it probably would be broken at some point soon. He had been avoiding Tonks, choosing other shifts she did not choose, but they were told to come here together, and Remus wouldn't argue against Dumbldore's orders. He just hoped he wouldn't give in to her, and let this affair of 'love' go on until it's inevidable end.
