Harper snuck down to the dungeons late at night to meet Jake. They had agreed to meet outside of his dorm before sneaking out of the school like they usually did. Because of their apparently conflicting sides, they had a hard time hanging out during the day. She hated it, honestly. Jake was her best friend, and...well...she kinda had a crush on him. Not that she would ever admit it to anyone but herself. If he found out, it could ruin their friendship.
She looked down at the Iron Cross in her hand. She'd given it to Jake as a kid when he pointed out hers and said that he thought it was cool. She had rigged it with the same spells that were on her coin from the DA. They were the only two that knew about it; it was how they kept in touch. His had gotten screwed up in transit when they traveled back in time, so she'd fixed it for him.
She hid around a corner in their usual spot to wait for Jake to show up. She hoped that she wasn't late; she tried really hard to be punctual for their outings.

Jake had been waiting all day for the night. He and Harper had agreed to meet in their normal spot. It was really hard for the two to meet up because he had to keep up his appearance up as a sort of spy. He was in fact the best kind of spy, the Dark Lord's son. However, it also made things a lot more dangerous if he was found out. He'd be hunted down quicker than any other traitor. Which meant he couldn't be seen with Harper for the betterment of the country, at least until Voldemort was gone again.
Jake really liked Harper and considered her one of his closest friends. She was quite cool and even helped give his information to those against Voldemort. He knew she was working with the Order, because if she wasn't, well he'd be drad, not that he ever doubted her, he trusted her with his life. Maybe even... He might have a small crush on her.
Jake quietly made it out to their normal meeting place, spotting Harper. He immeadiatly smiled and quietly said, "Hey. How are you? Oh... Were you able to fix my cross?" He really treasured the cross because he felt it symbolized their friendship, and no one knew it so he could wear the cross proudly in the open.

She smiled widely when she saw Jake. Harper was, honestly, a generally serious person; she rarely smiled or laughed around anyone but a select few. He was probably the only person that she fully cut loose and opened up around. She trusted him with her life, even if they pretended to hate each other during the day. It was necessary. She would never be allowed to help he Order again if she was caught with him, and he'd most likely be killed for his friendship with her. So they met up when they could, and it would have to do until something changed.
She refastened the Cross around his neck before giving him a quick hug. As much as she wished that she could have a normal friendship with Jake (her wish for a relationship beyond friendship with him was and always would be secret), moments like that made her happy. At the very least, her friendship with him hadn't suffered through the crazy life that they'd lead.
"Ja, I fixed it; it took a while. Sorry," she apologized sheepishly. "But it's good-as-new, now! I'm fine, by the way. I only sustained minor injuries during the battle; I didn't need to go to the Hospital Wing."
She shot him a dark look to punctuate the sentence. It was an argument that she'd been having with him since they were around ten. She never thought that her injuries were very serious, and he was always convinced that she hid the actual severity of them. She had inherited a very high threshold for pain from her mother...along with a crazy reckless streak that she considered bravery.
"Are you okay?" she asked, concerned. "You got checked out, ja? No serious injuries?"

Jake couldn't help but think that a smile on her face was quite nice, especially since when he saw her during the day she was so much more serious. Even so, her seriousness was a good quality, he just liked it when they could hang out like themselves. He was lucky to have met someone like her, because she accepted him for him and not his parents. He had to be very careful when selecting his friends, and she was his best choice of friend he had made.
"Don't apologize, I should be thanking you," Jake said before frowning slightly, knowing she usually hid how much she really was hurt, much like her mother. She should learn that she shouldn't do ot, that was how her mother died. "Are you sure you are ok? I mean I wouldn't want to loose you to the same thing your mum died from." No, it was hard to think of how he'd feel if she were to die and he could have tried to save her and yet didn't.do all he could to help her prevent it.
"Oh well I got a couple of scars and sprained my wrist, but nothing too serious," Jacob answered with a small smile, even if he was worried about her just as much as she was worried about him, well at least he thought, "Madame Pomfrey was about to make me stay overnight for my wrist until this other guy distracted her."

She'd set her mouth in its usual hard line when he questioned the severity of her injurie, but Her face softened when she reminded herself that he was just worried. They had gone through so much together that it was impossible for her to imagine what she would do if he died on her; she guessed that he must feel the same. It was just unimaginable. She'd known Jake since she was five-years-old.
She sighed and took his hand, flipping it over so she could see his palm and tracing the lines in it. She'd been doing this subconsciously for almost as long as she'd known him. She wasn't entirely sure why she did it; she just did. Since he'd never complained about her little quirk, she assumed that he didn't mind.
"Jake, I'm fine," she murmured. "I won't die on you, I promise. I only got a few scratches; it wasn't anything serious. You iced your wrist, ja? Do you want me to bandage it for you?"
She always carried a roll of cloth bandages just for occasions like this. It was impossible to say how many times they had come in handy. Just another aspect of her "Momma Bear"-esque personality, she supposed.
She smiled a little when he mentioned the "other guy" that had distracted Madame Pomfrey. She wondered if it was Teddy...
"Is that the one that broke his ribs?" she asked.

Actually usually Jake didn't notice her tracing his palm. Why? Well he was just used to it, he assumed. He remembered as a kid he noticed it, but didn't mind much. But this time he noticed, probably because he really was missing her touch and so he was paying very close attention right now.
"Thanks," Jake said looking at her with a big smile, and not those fake smiles he put on almost for the whole day, especially since his Slytherin 'friends' were extremely anti-order, but who else would hang around the son of Voldemort? "Well I'm fine really, but if you would like to wrap it up I would be fine with that." He didn't really think he needed it, but then again he was bad at assessing damage.
"Well if he is the type that would struggle away from a spell holding him down and try to run away, but stopping because it hurt too much, then yeah, he probably was the guy with broken ribs," Jake said laughing at the memory of the older guy jumping up shouting things about freedom before stopping because moving hurt too much. Whatever it was, he bet that the guy had done ot to distract Madame Pomfrey so she didn't keep him in that Hospital Wing... Or he just wanted Freedom that badly.

She shot him a disbelieving look as if to ask "Are you serious?" Sometimes, he acted like he forgot how she was. She wondered, with an anxious pang in her chest, if it had really been that long since they'd last hung out. That was worrying; she didn't want to ever drift away from him. They'd been friends for so long...
When he smiled at her, in that way that always made her feel as though it was reserved for her even if she knew it wasn't, all of those stupid little worries went away. Of course they'd always be together; they'd promised. It was a small child's promise and probably something stupid to cling to, but she did.
"Of course I'll bandage it," she scoffed. "You have to be careful when you hurt a joint; you could develop arthritis!"
She pulled out her handy-dandy roll of bandages and began carefully wrapping his injured wrist. She wasn't actually very good at healing magic, so this was what she did for medical care. It would work.
She listened to his description of what had happened in the hospital wing and laughed softly. That sounded like Teddy; it had to be him. If it wasn't, it was probably a Weasley.
"I know that guy," she admitted. "He's a riot."
She finished wrapping his wrist and taped it then smiled up at him victoriously.
"All done," she announced.

Well he didn't believe it had been too long since they hung out, just a few days, but in this enviroment, those he had to hang around were worse than in his time. Sure there weren't killings in school because someone didn't believe Voldemort was the best and voiced that opinion. But the feeling here was worse, probably because he wasn't used to an enviroment when the two conflicting beliefs were together in a very bad mixture. Days to him seemed to wear on forever. And he hated acting like a pureblood supremacists and just felt nasty each day. And at least around his few friends he trusted, which was Harper and maybe a couple others, he could escape. He wanted to be with her, well not just her, as he had maybe two others like her (though he wouldn't say he was crushing on them), but just being around his true friends was great.
"Thanks, Harp," Jake said with a huge smile examining his now wrapped up wrist, which was wrapped pretty well, "I don't worry about arthritis, I'll be fine." Well he knew she was always worried about him getting hurt, but he didn't mind, his mother never cared, so it was actually kinda nice for her to worry about him, no matter how he complained occasionally about her worrying him all the time.
"Oh, you know him?" Jake asked. He did know Teddy, however Jake had never seen him in his natural form, usually he saw him with weird hair, or when he was undercover. Teddy never knew Jake as the non-supremacist he was in secret, but as the Dark Lord's kid who needed watching. Many were under the impression he was much like his father, his true one, of course, so many didn't trust him unless they were Death Eater, and in that case they trusted himto lead them after Voldemort died. When he didn't he played it off to his 'friends' he had to bide his time. In fact he was about to come out as his true self when they teleported to this time, when he knew he needed to keep up the charade.

She knew that he hated hanging out with the Death Eater-wannabes he was forced to befriend; she didn't like that he had to act like one of them, either. It stung a little to have I pointed out that her mother had, technically, been a blood-traitor. She'd gotten into so many fights over someone comparing her mom to the Weasleys. She liked the Weasleys and ha dabsoluteky nothing against them; she just hated anyone that made fun of her mother. How the hell did they find out she was the child of a blood-traitor, anyway?
She tried to make Jake feel at ease as much as she possibly could when they managed to steal these moments together. He needed it; she knew that. So she tried to keep their chaotic outside lives out of their together-time. They would have time to think back on all of this later. She just wished that she could support him more openly...
"I know you don't worry about arthritis; that's why I do," she pointed out mildly. "Someone has to."
She began tracing the lines in the palm of his hand again as she thought. It was just ridiculously horrible that, as soon as things had begun to look up, they'd been brought back in time. It almost felt like some awful nightmare. She'd been so happy for him; he'd been so close to admitting his true beliefs. Now, though, he continued to put himself at risk as a spy....she did too, but that wasn the point.
"Ja, I know him. That was Ted," she mumbled. "He's a funny guy, kind of marches to the beat of his own drum."

Jake had been living like he was for most of his life. His cousin kept a close eye on him, and made sure to protect him. Phineas was like Bellatrix to Voldemort without all that lust stuff he knew Bellatrix must have for Jake's real father. Everytime Jake would be in trouble, whether it be Gryffindors trying to get a rise out of him, or attack him because he was Voldemort's kid, Phineas would come in and save him. He hated that. Phineas was much more like the kid of Voldemort with his attitude on everything. Only if he could have come out of the closet of being a blood traitor...
"Well I suppose," Jake replied smiling, thinking that he was too young to need to worry about arthritis, "You know I love you for that, you know as a friend of course." No Jake hadn't really thought about her in a romantic way too much. But he really did love her as a friend, whether their relationship would eventually evolve into something else, he didn't know. Sure he had thought about it before, but given their type of relationship it would be hard to do anything else, so he hadn't really thought about that much more than that.
"Oh that was Ted?" Jake asked, "He definitely was, as you say, marching to his own beat of his drum. He's quite different." Teddy was really different, especially in the hospital wing when he tried to run and get his freedom.

"Hey, Jake...do you figure we'll ever live in a world where we won't have to sneak around like this?" she asked.
It was mostly because of his cousin, honestly. She and Phineas had a long history of being at each other's throats at every given opportunity. Sometimes she won; sometimes he did. They'd been pretty even thus far. Now that she thought of it, he was probably the one that told those Slytherins about her status as a blood-traitor. She'd get him for that, later. She just had to do it covertly.
"Oh, ja, ja, I know," she replied dismissively. "Ich liebe dich, auch. ((I love you, too.)) You're always saying that when you know that you're in trouble. You can definitely get arthritis at your age, by the way."

"Y-yeah, of course," Jake said slightly taken aback by the abruptness of the question, "We were almost at it and it only took 16 or so years, and if I have anything to say about it, well we'll be able to not sneak around at the battle next year." He hoped that this time around at that battle they could defeat Voldemort, his real father. Whether he would change it or someone else would, he didn't know. Even if Voldemort died at the battle, well he was still born right, he was here right now. If not then he wouldn't exist.
Jake always hated it when Phineas was picking on Harper and he just had to grin and bear it. There were some times he even scared himself with his words one time when Phineas was picking on her. "Phin, not now. You can kill her and torture the blood traitor all you want as soon as class is over. In fact, leave it to me. I'll make her suffer." The way he had said it made him almost seem as evil as his real father. It was kinda scary, but that could be all in his head. Phineas didn't ever look prouder. As if he really cared.
"Darn, I though I got myself out of it!" Jake joked overdramatically, "It's worked every other time!" No. It didn't. But he might as well pretend, it didn't matter anyways. Yeah, he didn't like worrying about getting too injured... actually that was something the two had in common, if one looked at it that way.

"Just don't get yourself killed, alright? It's not a worthwhile world to live in if my best friend's dead," she informed him. "Und we both know how Phineas would feel about your real convictions. I don't want you to get hurt, especially by him. I don't really need anymore reasons to kill that dummkopf. ((Stupid-head, essentially.))"
The battle next year worried her, honestly. What if something happened to Etta or Jake? They were pretty much all she had since her mom died. She wasn't even sure if her dad was with the world of the living most of the time, and as much as she liked the other kids from the camp, she'd never been part of their close-knit group. The only ones that really spoke to her much were Teddy and Scorp, and even they were closer to others than they were to her.
She shook off the melancholy line of thought to smile a little and shake her head. He knew that it never worked. He worried about her, and she worried about him. That was how it had worked since they were lite kids. Someone needed to take care of the two of them.
"Oh, ja, every other time," she agreed sarcasticay. "Like the time you fell on the beehive?"

"I promise I won't," Jake said though he wasn't sure if he could keep that promise, "Contrary to what Phineas seems to think, I can defend myself quite well." It was quite annoying all the stuff that Phineas did, always protecting him and insulting so many people. Phineas was just a demon when it came to everything. Sure some found that boy funny and such a leader, but to Jake he was just annoying, mean and rude. "Let's just hope his Dragon Fire doesn't tip the scales even more in Voldemort's favor." They didn't need Voldemort to win again. That wouldn't be great.
The thing about the next battle that worried him most is that if Voldemort died, or Bellatrix died, would he never exist? He just hoped something happened and maybe this was some sort of Alternate Universe where he would still exist.
"Yeah, exactly!" Jake said with a joking smile, "It always works! Though those bees were vicious..." He never liked bees, especially after that incident.

"Don't make promises unless you're sure you can keep them," she scolded. "Just promise that you'll try."
There were some wheels turning elsewhere that she'd learned of that could counteract the Dragon's Fire, but she wasn't going to get his hopes up until she learned of their decision. There hadn't been peace between the Ministry and the Curia since World War Two. She had no reason to believe that there would be now except for fearful whispers of a treaty and Cavaliere presence in the Curia's London headquarters that she'd heard in Knockturn Alley. She could only hope that this would be enough and that heir meddling had somehow created a different reality where Jake could still exist.
"Well, at least you learned to not be clutzy around beehives," she sighed jokingly.
