Remus has many scars on his body, despite the employment of well used healing magic on him over the years. His Lycanthropy has seen to it more than anything: as a child, in Hogwarts, when he was sent alone to what was later dubbed 'The Shrieking Shack', he bit and scratched himself while he had no other beings to attack in his altered state of mind. The amount of scars from self inflicted wounds he's given himself over the years, at the very least, do pale in comparison to the amount of injuries he's sustained. The physical stress of the transformations have also wreaked havoc on his body.
Remus' eyes, almost inhuman in brightness, are rarely seen without dark circles under them, a combination of his lycanthropy and honest stress, though his blue eyes always carry a kind, warm light. He appears thin and often sickly, although his body is wrapped in lean muscle. It is rare to see Remus in any informal clothing, jeans or tee shirts, and on that note just as rare to see him wearing anything new. Income has always been difficult for the man to come by, often denied jobs because of his ailment, and Remus was never one to accept charity, so his appearance was often one that could be described as 'shabby'. HIs hair is shaggy, reaching midway past his ears, and graying a bit already.
Remus spent the first few years of his life as any young boy would. His parents loved him dearly, he was often pushing the boundaries of their rules, and always snubbing his vegetables. His parents were middle class, working average jobs--his mother at a local restaurant and his father at the Ministry of Magic, serving with the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. Neither were particularly high paying jobs, but they saw the bills paid and the family fed. It wasn't until his father had a particularly nasty run in with the werewolf Fenrir Greyback that things changed for Remus, and drastically. The werewolf took revenge on John for his insults by attacking his son and only child. Remus was infected with lycanthropy, and from then on his life became considerably more difficult.
His parents had a difficult time attending to his needs after that, or more specifically, they had difficulty looking after him during his transformations. They ended up having to lock him up every month and, right afterwards, take him straight to St. Mungo's for treatment of his own self inflicted injuries. They cared for him in every way they could, but the disease created a wedge between the family that grew deeper and wider as the years passed. It was the very start of Remus' dwindling self esteem. He was suddenly shunned and feared by their neighbors, who were afraid he'd attack them and their families. It wasn't until he went to Hogwarts that he had friends again, and found them in the Marauders. It was funny how such confident, outgoing people could find a reason to accept the quiet boy, but they did, and Remus clung to their friendship ever since then.
When the First War struck it was like Fenrir's attack all over again, for it shook his entire world. Even at the end of it, he was not able to pick up the pieces for some time. One of his best friends was murdered, betrayed by one of the people they trusted, the other was in Azkaban, and although Voldemort was finally dead--or so they thought--he'd left behind the deaths of far too many good people. He didn't even feel as though his life was beginning to get back on track until he was invited to teach at Hogwarts and was reunited not only with his friend's son, but with Sirius as well. It's clear that Remus has seen and known a lot of hardships in his life, but also a lot of wonderful things, the things that kept him going through it all. .
