Severus entered the forbidden forest alone. His black cloak swished behind him as he walked. He held his wand in his right hand and held it in front of him. It was his turn to guard the forest entrance to the school. He did not ask for the job, Dumbledore couldn’t find anyone else that was up for it. He had to stay out there all night, incase unwanted visitors showed up. During these times anyone could show up, death eaters, aurors, other ministry officials, etc.
As he walked through the uneven paths in the forest, he stopped every so often to listen if anyone had been following him. He arrived at the entrance to the school half an hour later. Severus checked the wards and the surrounding area. Nothing seemed out of placed. This is going to be an uneventful night, he thought as he leaned against one of the stone pillars which held the gate.
He took out a copy of the Evening Prophet and began to read. Although he didn’t believe half the stuff in the Prophet, it was entertaining to see how wrong people were in their opinions of Voldemort. As he flipped through the pages, it noticed a few deaths, as well as a small section marking the anniversary of Lily and James’ death.
There wasn’t a day that went by where Severus did not think of Lily, he regretted every day not telling her how he truly felt about her. He had loved her ever since they started school. They had developed at friendship at first. They spend all of their time together until they were around age fifteen. At that time, everything was starting to fall apart.
Severus came back to reality, blocking out thoughts about his past. He had heard something from the other side of the gate. Dropping the paper, he focused on the darkness in front of him. He didn’t dare light his wand and give himself away. He would wait, until the proper moment.
