"And I'll keep doing the same and maybe one day we'll find out that I should stick to more scientific pursuits than philosophy," she agreed with a laugh.
She knew Severus well, and she knew that he had a strict set of beliefs that he didn't compromise and didn't go against. It was how she was able to forgive him so easily for Dumbledore's death. Even if she didn't know exactly why he did it, she knew that her friend wouldn't do something like that if it he didn't think it was for the best. And she could accept that.
"Oh, I know I could! Would you like a demonstration?" she asked jokingly.
A big part of the reason that she and Severus had even become friends initially was because of her brother, Chris. In Mari and Sev's first year, on the train ride to the school, Chris had gotten into a fight with James Potter and broken his nose. Sev had been enlisted by Mari's eldest sister, the Head Girl and a member of Slytherin House at the time, to help keep Chris in their compartment on the train while they waited for their father to arrive to deal with him. Since Mari was the youngest sibling, she'd also been babysitting Chris, and that was how they met.

"It sounds like a plan," Sev said with a nod, "Just make sure you get to that someday. I do not wish to see you hurt."
Sev was quite confident in his abilities to play spy. And he wasn't going to give up any time soon. But Sev lately had been asking the question, why. Why was he protecting Lily's son, even though she was dead? He felt that he killed her, and she gave her life for this boy. She loved her son more than she had ever loved him. Sev felt that what he was doing was right, but it hurt quite a bit seeing everyone he was helping hating him. Seeing all those he hated seem to 'love' him. The life of a spy was hard, and he knew that he had what it took to be one, it was just a matter of enduring now.
"I think I would like to pass on that offer," Sev replied with a chuckle and a slightly wider smile than before.

"I don't want to see you hurt, either, so...be careful, alright?" she asked. "You're one man with a lot of enemies, Sev."
She was confident that he could be an effective spy; she just wasn't confident that he could do so without getting himself hurt. That was what made her worry about him so much....well, that and the fact that he never accepted the help that was offered to him. Ever, much to her unending irritation.
"Pfft! Fine," she sighed, rolling her eyes jokingly.

"I know that better than anyone else," Sev replied closing his eyes for a second, before reopening them and adding, "I'll be as careful as I can."
Yeah, he wasn't one to accept help. He preferred to go solo so he wouldn't put others at risk if he screwed up. He didn't mess up that often, but he had in the past, and couldn't risk the cost to others, unless they were Death Eaters. The world would be a lot better of a place without the Death Eaters.
"I could always have Amycus come here and you could demonstrate," Sev suggested jokingly.

"Which is the same thing as saying you won't really be careful," she scoffed.
He'd always claim that he'd be cautious, but then magically "forget." She blamed it on spending too much time with Chris, Vinny and Ricki...oh, speaking of Ricki. She hadn't told him that he was out of Azkaban! Geez, she wasn't usually so scatter-brained; warning him about Ricki had been the whole reason that she'd come here!
"Oh, before I forget again...Ricki broke out of Azkaban," she mumbled.
Ricki Angeli had been the final member of their little group throughout school. A Slytherin that had been in Chris's year, he'd never followed rules well. After school, he got mixed up with the Death Eaters and subsequently wound up in Azkaban not long before his wife, Gwyn, died.

"With my line of work, it's hard to be careful and do my job well," Sev noted.
It wasn't the professor or Headmaster part of it, but the triple agent part. When she had mentioned Ricki, he became ever so slightly worried, but tried not to show it. He had expected pretty much all the Death Eaters to break out of Azkaban, besides the ones the Dark Lord kept in there for punishment of a failure they had.
"Just like countless others, I suppose," Sev said with a nod, "I'll be sure to be mindful of this information."

"Oh, details, details," she scoffed.
It was probably because Marissa had been one of only two girls (along with the now-deceased Lorien Brooks, god rest her soul) that had ever really hung around their group, but she had a tendency to fret and worry over her friends. Sev had once jokingly told her that she'd be a good mother if she didn't smother her children (a comment that she still resented).
"Just...make sure that the idiot doesn't get himself killed, alright?" she mumbled.

"Ah, but details are the most important part of everything," Sev reminded her.
Sev still believed that Marissa was a very mother, when she didn't smother her children. Actually, Sev didn't know how great of mother she was, as they hadn't seen each other in years, and he didn't know her children quite well. He could imagine the kind of mother she was at least.
"I will try my best. You won't have to worry about him, I will keep an eye on him," Severus replied with a small smile.

"Don't remind me," she groaned. "I've been dealing with nothing but details for years, now!"
She actually felt kind of bad about him not getting to see her children very often over the past sixteen years; he was their godfather, after all. Prior to their entrance in the war, Gabe, Seline and Damien had seen him when they visited Marissa's aunt Celesta in Britain, but it had been years since then. She hoped that Gabe dropped in to visit Sev soon and introduce him to Lexi and Julius...
"I can't help but worry about him; he's irresponsible and reckless," she grumbled.

"So have I, but you don't see me complaining, now do you?" Sev teased crossing his arms across his body.
It really was too bad that he didn't see them very often. Sev knew why he was their godfather, as he was good friends with their father and their mother, quite obviously, but he couldn't help but think of how terrible of a godfather he would be if anything happened to Mari just like with Vinny. He'd have a little rebellion on his hands, he was sure, especially if he tried acting like he was their father. Sev liked her children from the little time he had really seen them, but he did wish he was able to see them more often.
"That's to say the least. With my connections, I am sure I can keep him safe," Sev assured her.

"At least you've had kids to torment; I've been stuck in Sardinia," she retorted, sticking her tongue out at him.
Honestly, Mari's two sons weren't the ones that Sev should be worried about. They were both adults now; one was getting married, and the other had children of his own. It was her daughter, Seline, that would be going to live with him if she died, and Seline wasn't a problem-child by any stretch of the imagination. He'd missed the worst of it with Seline's brothers. Speaking of Gabe and Damien, Marissa would most definitely be reminding Gabe to drop by and introduce Sev to Mari's grandchildren.
"Good..good. I worry about him. He'd get himself killed if someone didn't."

"I've had to deal with those kids as well. It's very frustrating at times," Sev said playfully, though not resorting to sticking his tongue out, he wasn't at that point... at least not yet.
True, the two boys were adults, but even still, he was slightly worried about them as well. They would've lost both their parents, and they were just beginning their adult lives. There would be no one to help guide them through being a young adult, which Sev would fail miserably at. Who would want to listen to a man who never had anyone he really loved besides a woman who loved another man? Then again, they had been adults for longer than most people their age. Seline wouldn't be too much of a problem, he supposed.
"He probably would," Sev agreed with a sigh.

"Ah....kids. I still remember when Gabe came home and told me his girlfriend was pregnant," she sighed.
Brielle had been a nice girl; it was a pity that she was dead. As Marissa recalled, Brielle had attended Hogwarts, along with her younger sister Eliza. Bri had been a...Ravenclaw, right? She'd seemed like a Ravenclaw...and Mari was pretty sure Gabe had mentioned it. She'd go with Ravenclaw.
"His son, Leo, is just as bad," she noted. "That daughter of his can be a bit of an unholy terror, though...she reminds me a lot of Gwyn."

"A bit a of a shock I take it?" Sev asked with a small smile; he'd never had grandchildren, nor children himself so he didn't know how it would be like to know that he would be a grandparent or parent, "I still have yet to meet his children, I think it might be interesting to meet those two kids."
Sev never really was a kid person, but he couldn't help but thinking that he would probably like a kid if he wasn't as old as he was. However, that was not going to happen, so he might as well take joy out of being a god-grandfather or something.
"Like parents like children, I take it?" Sev chuckled at the thought of Ricki's children being like him and his wife. It was a little sad he was the only one out of their group who didn't have any children.

"I liked Brielle, don't get me wrong, but they were sixteen! Of course it was a shock!" she sighed. "He seriously hasn't brought them by, yet? He's back in town as of a few weeks ago; I'll send him by your place with Lexi and Julius."
As much as Sev claimed that he wasn't a kid person, Mari thought that he'd be a good father. He'd always been in love with Lily, though, and it prevented him having any children of his own. That had been part of the reason that Mari and Vinny had decided to make him their kids' god-father. Even if he never admitted to it, she suspected that it had cheered him up a little to have little Gabe and Damien call him Uncle Sev.
"Oh, most definitely...down to the height. His daughter, Michelle, is tall," she recalled. "Just like him and Gwyn."
