Two years earlier, Nymphadora Tonks was an unmarried auror who didn't have much to do except work for the Ministry of Magic. That is, until the day she realized that the Minister was lying and refused to tell the truth about the Dark Lord's return. She could remember the day she decided to join the Order of the Pheniox clearly, well, not as clear as she could remember the first meeting. The one where she met Remus Lupin.
She'd been standing in front of a mirror for an hour deciding how she wanted her hair to look for this meeting. When her mother finally said she had to leave or she wouldn't make it. She went with what it was. Long blonde hair with corkscrewed curls. When she arrived at the street, she looked around not seeing anyone else coming. Maybe she was too late and they'd all gone home. She looked at the houses looking for Number 12 on the street. At first she figured she'd give up. Dumbledore had told her to be there so maybe if she looked at the note he sent her she'd see it. She pulled out the note and read it thrice over. It gave the address, Number 12 Grimmauld Place, and it was signed by Dumbledore. She looked up and counted the numbers on each of the houses. 10, 11, 12, 13. 12! There it was! This time it was there. She ran up to the door and knocked. She heard the locks click and Kingsley Shacklebolt opened the door.
"Kingsley! Oh, good I'm not too late." she said with a sigh of relief.
"Good to see you Tonks, come on in before anyone sees." Kingsley said in his deep rumbling voice, "No one followed you?"
"Not that I know of." Tonks repiled shrugging. She honestly hadn't checked. Kingsley led her back to where everyone else was. Before she entered the door to the stairs that led to the basement kitchen, she noticed curtians where there probably shouldn't be any. She figured it was a picture or something. She shrugged and wasn't watching her feet when she tripped over an umbrella stand. She held her foot and then the room was filled with screaming. She covered her ears. Why on earth was someone screaming about an umbrella stand? Then she heard feet coming from the basement.

Remus had been in the basement, cleaning out a closet that Molly had assigned him earlier to clean. However, due to his call to the Ministry earlier about his werewolf status and a few more regulations that were new required it, he didn't get to cleaning the closet until recently. He knew he needed to hurry, so he had been working quickly, alone in the basement. It was very interesting as to what he found, including bottles and bottles of Love Potion, Truth Potion, and Polyjuice Potion. Sure there were a couple of other potions that he could and could not identify, but it was his job to clean it out, and give the useful stuff to Mad-Eye who would test it's strength, before stowing it in the cupboard of potions they used for the Order's potions.
The momentary peace and quiet was interrupted by a loud crash from upstairs, and the soon to follow screeches of Mrs. Black. Remus jumped at the loud sounds, before hurling himself up the steps towards the main floor. He opened the door to the main floor and spotting a young woman on the ground by an umbrella stand. Thankfully, he heard Sirius voice ("Shut up! Shut up, you old hag!), and knew he was already taking care of Mrs. Black's portrait, and that would leave him to help the young woman up.
"Are you alright?" Remus asked offering his hand to the young lady, before smiling noticing her blonde hair with corkscrews. He didn't recognize the woman, but out of the new recruits, only one of them were female. "You must be Sirius' baby cousin, Nymphadora." He could remember Sirius baby-sitting Nymphadora when she was about 5 years old, but he didn't ever meet the girl. He simply heard stories of the little 5 year old Metamorphagus. It was actually quite pleasant to finally meet the young lady. Though he didn't want to admit it, she was a very pretty woman, and he was attracted to her.

Tonks looked up when the screaming stopped. She'd had her eyes closed while she tried to block out the sound of screaming. When she looked up, she saw the face of someone she didn't know but she could already feel a pull toward him.
"I'm fine, just stubbed my toe." she shrugged, "I'm horribly clumsy, and didn't notice the umbrella stand. I'm sorry I didn't mean to knock it over.." she appologized for no reason, well, she hadn't meant to knock it over but she didn't know what to say about it.
She heard the name 'Nymphadora' and instantly lost the sweet innocent girl attitude. It was like seeing someone make a complete transformation. Her hair turned the color of fire and looked like it was a blazing inferno. No one called her that anymore, she didn't allow anyone too. "Don't. Call. Me. Nymphadora." she spat. "That horrible name isn't my name. Call me Tonks." She shook her head and her curls had disappeared and bright bubblegum pink curls took their place.
"And what may I call you sir?" she asked with a candy sweet smile.

Remus couldn't help but keep a small grin on his face. He couldn't help but look at her, and how cute she seemed, falling over the umbrella stand. Realizing this, he cleared his throat, looking towards where Sirius would be coming from any second before looking back, with the grin not leaving his face.
"It's no problem at all. No lasting damage, unless you count Mrs. Black's screeches that will haunt your dreams," Remus chuckled softly, feeling quite lame. However, at that point, Remus realized that he couldn't allow himself to get that close to her, and how his guard was down at the moment. He needed to close himself off from her, or she would end up hurt. He wiped the grin off of his face and straightened himself up.
Just as he began closing up his gates to himself, they were instantly opened once more from his surprise of her indignation towards her name. He tried to close himself up again, but it was a lot harder this time, and would take a little bit. For the time, he had to be careful as he closed himself up into his metaphoric fortress that only four people managed to scale, and one scaling it twice, and another that was kicked out for good. The other two died on him. "I-I'm sorry. I didn't realize you preferred something else, Ms. Tonks," Remus replied startled slightly and off guard. Oh to be a man and confronted by such a beautiful young lady, no matter what appearance she morphed into.
"I am Remus Lupin," Remus introduced himself giving her a little bow, before getting nervous again, "I... erm... I think that I should tell you, as I do all Order recruits... I'm..." Why was this so hard? He did this many times over already. Everyone in the Order knew. Some refused to be in a meeting with him, but Dumbledore defended him, and now everyone tolerated being in the Order with a... monster. "I'm a werewolf... Now, please don't go yet. I know you probably won't want to see me ever, outside of meetings, but I thought you should hear it from me before the meeting and from Dumbledore." He was ready for her to give him the worst, yell at him about how his kind endanger good people like them. Reply coldly and never speak to him again. There would be no way that she'd respond like the four did in school, not even Kingsley had, or anyone ever before (excluding the four and Harry Potter and his friends).

Tonks didn't know what to say. She smiled and moved some hair out of her eyes, she always did that when she was nervous. She couldn't even help but chuckle and bite her thumb nail. Why was she so nervous? She was never nervous. She was one of the best aurors of the time and wasn't afraid of anything.
"She might not be the only thing in my dreams." she laughed, "I'm sure I'll dream of a death eater or two. My aunts actually are Death Eaters..." Tonks gathered herself and her lips were a tight line. She was biting back questions but she was sure he would say no. She'd only just met him after all.
Tonks took a deep breath. She didn't like that God awful name. Who names their child Nyphadora anyway? She shook her head. She thought Dumbledore would have told everyone about calling her that. She'd been very specific about it when she'd told him. "Please don't call miss either. I'm not a miss, I am a Tonks." She didn't know how else to put it. She wasn't like any other girl, she was Tonks.
Tonks didn't know what to do when he slightly bowed, he was quite taller than her so it was kind of creepy. She titled her head to the side when he tried to tell her something. A werewolf? A werewolf?! The slight smile she had grew larger. Another freak! Another outcast! She almost punched the air in victory, she actually started bouncing. "You're a werewolf?" she sounded delighted, "This is grand! Oh you must come to lunch with me sometime. Oh, sorry that was a little sudden. You don't really have to go to lunch with me. But I'm flabbergasted that there are people out there who don't support helping people. I am actually shunned by the rest of my family because I'm a half-blood and my mum married a muggle."

Dear Lord, what was it with him? He had never acted this way towards anyone since he was 19 (and of course, Padfoot and Prongs nearly forced him into the relationship, which he broke off when Prongs and Lily died), and even that wasn't nearly as sudden, and striking as this woman seemed to be. He didn't understand what had hit him, but it hit him hard, and was simply making him think the most absurd thoughts, though his protective barrier prevented him from saying said absurd thoughts.
"Well, perhaps we can help fill those dreams with good things, instead of those dark things," Remus reply and immediately wanted to slap himself. He thought too soon. His protective barrier obviously wasn't as strong as he felt it was. At least he didn't say that he could fill her dreams with good things. That would become awkward. Why was he acting like such an idiot. Please, Sirius come in and save him from making more of a fool of himself!
Remus began thinking that perhaps if he were ever to have a daughter he could come up with a unique name like Nymphadora, though not as unique as her name. But, Remus had to banish those thoughts, because he knew he could never have a kid. Thinking about such a thing would get his hopes up, and have them crushed by life and his condition. "A Tonks? I'm sorry, Tonks, I didn't realize. Your name is very unique, though, just as unique as one it names," Remus stated trying to place his barriers up, but they had just been completely pounded to dust with her next statement about his werewolf status.
Surely she misunderstood him. Why wasn't she running away, or quitting right now? That's what a normal person would do. However, as he just stated, she was unique. Could there really be someone else who would accept him right off the bat like that? No, she must think he was joking or something. "You're joking..." Remus stated more as a question than a statement before his smile turned into a blank expression, "I am a werewolf, and you aren't... threatened?" Even Kingsley had a very bad first impression of him, though after a couple of minutes Kingsley realized he wasn't like most werewolves. "Those like me kill, maim, and scar for life. You barely know me, and you do not even know if I am like others." Remus had this talk with the Marauders, and eventually Lily. Lily, however, was a lot harder to get points, as Lily didn't grow up with the threat of becoming a monster like he was. In fact, she was probably the most accepting out of all of his friends, and the friendliness of the three other Marauders after that was a lot more than any werewolf in his position could ask for. Nymphadora couldn't be like them... They were unique, and four-of-a-kind. And here comes Nymphadora just meeting him, not even knowing him almost at all, and just being happy about it. "It's not like your parentage or ability, which you can... mostly control, makes people run away," Remus then mumbled quietly to himself. He didn't want to get in an argument, but she didn't understand his position and just how bad he had been outcasted. Kicked out of stores after his condition was revealed to the public; he couldn't even go to Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley without receiving a few nasty stares and snarky comments directed towards him. He couldn't blame her. She didn't understand. She was too young to really understand anyways... or maybe that was just an excuse he was using to push her away and not let her him, as he did with Sirius or the others of his friends.

Tonks started to look at the ground when there were noises coming from the stairs. She flinched much like a deer would when it heard predators coming. Even before someone started to come down the stairs, Tonks's heart was doing flips. It had only done flips twice before. The first time was when she first went to Hogwarts and was sitting in front of everyone with that stupid hat on her head, the second time was her first time testing to be an Auror. Now when she was talking to Remus Lupin, a man she'd only just met. She honestly felt quite awkward.
"So long as I have a good time." she chuckled. She messed with her hair, then shook it till it was a shoulder length black and a bit puffy, she didn't even know why she'd changed it to that. Then, after giving it a second thought, she added a few subtle gold high lights. Not long later, Sirius stepped off the staircase shaking his head.
"Oi, Remus, don't tell me you're picking on a girl. Since when do you do that?" Sirius chuckled, "Alright, she looks framilliar. Almost like my cousin 'Dromeda."
"Funny thing, I'm her daughter. Tonks."
"Sirius, but I'm guessing you knew that."
"Mum had a funny way of not mentioning any of her family." Tonks felt bad about that. She hadn't really known anything till recently. She looked back at Lupin, "I don't like my name. It means gift of the Nymphs. Do I look like a Nymph to you?" She looked a little bit ticked off but she would never ever go off on anyone unless severly needed.
"Why would I be threatened? Something you should know, I don't care what you are. If I want to be your friend, I will be your friend." She pursed her lips and smirked, "I'm an Auror. I face death every day. But no, here I stand. I'm not afraid of any creature. Except the occasional Death Eater... and You-Know-Who."
"Oh boo hoo, cry me a river, build a bridge, and get over it. People's opinions, just bring you down." Tonks smirked. She liked the wway that sounded, although it sounded better in her head. "Sadly that sounded better in my head.."

Remus almost sighed with relief when Sirius came down, but was immediately regretful that he did. He was not picking on her. If anything he was subconsciously trying to flirt with her. But either way, he wanted to treat her just like Sirius, but all this nervousness and complete astounding by her, was getting in the way. He really didn't know what to say or do. Perhaps it would be better if he just shut his mouth and just walk away, but his body wouldn't allow that for some reason.
"I was not picking on her!" Remus insisted.
"Then you're flirting with her! If you two were to get married, we actually would be related!" Sirius laughed. Remus glared at Sirius. He already knew how Remus felt about marriage and how he wouldn't get married.
"Shut up, Padfoot!" Remus replied in response, a terrible comeback if he might add so himself. Why did he have a friend that was so interfering? Well, it was probably due to his 'do not care about your werewolf-ness'-itis.
"Well, in most stories nymphs are depicted as beautiful, young maidens who love to dance and sing; so yes, you seem a lot like them in that way at least," Remus noted with a small smile. Greek mythology was not his strong suit though, but he was sure that was correct in the sense that he knew of them.
"So... you're not afraid of Greyback, or the other werewolves turning you into a monster?" Remus inquired before adding, "Well, Voldemort is quite frightening sometimes, and your dear Aunt Bellatrix."
"Who I will eventually end up killing for all her misdoings," Sirius joined in with a small smile though Remus knew that Sirius was bitter towards pretty much all of his family besides the Tonks'.
"I-I'm sorry... I'm just extremely used to people hating me for it," Remus said in defeat. It didn't matter that much right now. If they were to become closer friends... or whatever, then it would turn into a bigger problem that she didn't care about it, and obviously underestimated the effects it had on him.

Tonks tugged at her hair, why did they have to bring up marrige? Tonks's mother had been trying since she graduated to get her a boyfriend. Andromeda had suggested Charlie, Molly had suggested Bill, her father suggested a book; at some point she'd given up and said she wasn't going to get married until she found the perfect guy. It was a dissaponting day for her mother.
Her cheeks flushed a pinkish color, she hadn't even picked up on the fact that he was flirting, orwas trying to. She honestly hadn't been trying to. "Um, no one minds if I put my two sense in? No? Good because I am. I told my mother I wasn't going to get married until I found the perfect guy, so far, I've had no luck. Was hoping it would change tonight, I'll find out when I go home."
"Don't bring up dancing and singing . . . I'm horrible at those activites. I'm not pretty, no, no, no. I swear everyone that says that sees something different then me, I just don't see it." she shook her head, smacking her face with her hair. "I am no nymph. I'm not even what my mother chose for a middle name for me, I think it's Italian but I never asked. And my last name means fool, and I am a fool. Kind of a jokester, I liked to play tricks on the Slytherins a few years ago. Oh memories." she smiled thinking of how many times she'd hold a string up and watch Slytherin after Slytherin fall at their common room door.
"Why should I be afraid? They should be more afraid of me. I honesly think it'd be quite fun trying to see him catch me. I'm quite quick, not as quick as Charlie but I'm still pretty fast." she chuckled, "And Bellatrix has a few people after her. She practically shunned my mother, and took Narcissa with her. I want to get a few hits in before you kill her Sirius."
"Eh, you'll get used to me quick pal. I'm very noticable and a ball. You're still going to lunch with me one day Remus Lupin. You have no option. I don't care if no one else speaks to me, you are going to lunch with a metamorphagus that people think is a joke." Tonks grinned triumphantly.

She added in her two cents about marriage and felt relieved, because then he wouldn't have to deal with having to deal with her trying to marry him. He could never fulfill the 'perfect guy' part of what she was looking for. At least he didn't have to feel so tense around her with that part of a relationship hanging over his head.
"That is quite smart of you," Remus commented, "I don't plan on getting married anytime soon. I have not had luck in the dating world." He didn't want to hear the speech that the Marauders and the one Marauderette always gave him about the werewolf getting in the way. He heard that enough. At least it meant someone cared, but didn't understand what he was going through. No one besides a fellow werewolf would understand. But too many werewolves were on Greyback's side and would try to kill him if they found out too much of what he has done. He wasn't sure if they wouldn't attack him on sight, as he had the obvious signs to the fellow werewolves of him trying to live with the witches and wizards. At least he stayed out of their scope for now, or they may come after him.
"I've offered to hook you up, Moony! How about Emmeline Vance?" Sirius suggested nudging him with a huge wolfish smile.
"That's fine," Remus refused before sending Tonks a smile, "I'm sorry about Sirius, he's a bit lonely and has forgotten how to act around people."
"I do know how to act!" Sirius insisted.
"Maybe you should show it," Remus replied with a laugh. Sirius was like a brother to Remus, and so he felt comfortable to drop his act with Sirius, and perhaps even be slightly playful. Then again, he was still Remus, and so his playfulness was limited, as he was a fairly serious person no matter who he was around.
"Of course you're pretty," Remus replied, almost expecting Sirius to react in an immature way to what he was saying to his little cousin (technically second cousin, but who cared really? She was part of the only part of his family he still considered family). "Sure you can morph into whatever you want, but what truly makes one beautiful is their actions. And you have a good choice in how you choose to look." Remus wasn't trying to be nice or complimenting, but he was just stating what first came to mind. He really needed to think about what he said before he said it, but he didn't focus as well right now on thinking things through. Sirius must be rubbing off on him.
"If an umbrella stand doesn't get in your way, I suppose," Remus laughed, obviously joking before clearing his throat, "A smart person knows when to fear something... I'm not saying you're not smart, because I am sure you are, but courage isn't not fearing something, but facing the fear. Even I am afraid of Greyback and what he could cause for those who I care about... that remain." Sirius shot him a little bit of a smile and began leaning against a nearby wall, something he didn't do before his imprisonment. Sirius was Sirius, but had changed a lot during his imprisonment, and Remus felt extremely sorry for him. That was part of the reason he was taking up residence here, to keep him company, because Remus did own his parents' house, which was old, dusty and quite broken down, but a home.
"If I can get used to Padfoot, I can get used to any oddball," Remus stated before sighing in defeat, "I suppose there is no getting out of this. As long as it is not on the full moon, I will have lunch with you." Remus felt it wasn't going to be too dangerous just to be around her a little bit more than necessary. He still didn't understand how anyone could accept him so readily besides the five, no, four, as one fell from his list of friends when he learned of his treachery. He should've known that one of his friends would cause all those he cared about, or most, to suffer and betray him.

"Maybe that luck with dating will change?" Tonks smiled nervoulsy. She honestly wouldn't mind dating him, but she'd get more odd looks than she already did. She didn't know what to say when Sirius was recomending people. It was actually quite awkward, her being in the ministry and knowing Emmeliene Vance and all. "It's fine, quite entertaining really. Something to get a kick out of, picture him dating someone in the Magical creatures circut. Could actually be quite funny."
Tonks bit the inside of her lip. He thought she was pretty? Maybe he had a few screws loose. Then she heard Siruis chuckled slightly and mutter, "Deffintly flirting with my cousin's daughter." which made her flush a very bright shade of red. "M-maybe I should go find M-Molly. She probably wants to see me." She started to turn but Sirius had her by the upper arm.
"You can help Remus out in the basement by sorting potioins."
"U-um o-okay." Tonks replied nervoulsy.
"I'll make sure to watch my feet. Maybe the other thing I need is the right partner." She raised her eye brows teasingly and laughed. She was only joking, right? "I fear something worse than people. I fear rejection. Tell me that's not something to fear. Several people told me I should ask Charlie out to dinner, I never did because I didn't want to get rejected. And look where I am now. A single twenty four year old who is horrible at just plain being able to talk normally with someone she likes. Why did I refer to myself in the third person?"
"Tomorrow then. One o'clock sharp. Don't be late." she winked and grinned, "I'll, uh, make sure to be noticeable. If I'm not, I'll wave."

"That I doubt," Remus stated plainly and simply. That was one of the few things that he was completely positive about. Even if someone were to accept what he was, he wasn't as great of a person as some picture him to be. He had commitment issues, occasional stupidity, and his cowardliness, not to mention all the scars around his body that made him very undesirable. He didn't deserve anyone that he would like in the same way. And he wouldn't take anything he didn't deserve. "But, I guess we'll have to wait to see." He wasn't planning on it at least.
"I would never date a ministry worker!" Sirius insisted.
"And then what was Marlene?" Remus inquired with a chuckle.
"She wasn't an official worker! Just a trainee!" Sirius countered.
"His attitude can either be funny, or as it is most of the time, annoying," Remus joked, because he really did enjoy Sirius' company, though Sirius was annoying when it came to him socializing with woman. Sirius was always trying to get him a girl, but he didn't seem to get the hint that he was not going to ever get too serious with someone, at least he believed it.
Remus bit his tongue when he heard Sirius mutter about him 'flirting' with her. He was doing no such thing! Probably. "I-I don't need much help, I'm nearly done..." Though if he wasn't done by the time the meeting would start, Molly would not be happy with him. Then again, she'd get over it when she began worrying about him eating a lot during dinner later.
"Nope, nope, I know how messy that closet was, and you will need some help to finish it before Molly goes on rampage about how you didn't finish your job," Sirius noted. Remus could tell from Sirius' face that he was holding in a perverted thought as Sirius did not want to have his baby cousin become even more embarrassed (though that would be a fun sight to see) and prevent Remus from allowing someone to help him out (because that would not be a fun sight or future talking to).
"I suppose that's correct. Someone to be there to pick you up when you've fallen, and watch out and prevent you from falling when it is possible," Remus stated with a smile, thinking of how nice it would be to have someone of his own, before reprimanding himself for even allowing those thoughts as he felt it would never happen to him, "Rejection..." Remus thought about how most of his commitment issues and his assumption everyone hated him for what he was stemmed from such a fear. "I think that most of us have that fear." For some reason he felt a little bit of jealousy towards Charlie and how she would've asked him out to dinner if she didn't fear rejection. "You did because you are an unique individual," Remus shrugged.
"I'm sure I will be able to find you," Remus replied, knowing she would be one of the fear who wouldn't look at him with disgust.

Tonks pursed her lips. Everyone had a renewed chance, some just had to wait longer than others. "Never know, some cute blonde might step in and bring you to your knees." she joked trying to keep a straight face. She never thought it would be her in the end really. "And by that I mean marrige so we're all clear."
"Well now I know what side of the family I get my personality from, and mum tried hiding this from me.." she shook her head holding in a laugh. She understood the whole, trying to be set up on dates several times with none of them really happening.
Tonks just kind of stood there while Sirius and Remus argued over what she would be doing. "I'm alright at sorting out potions, I got exceeds expectations in my fifth year, I shouldn't be too bad. And Mad-Eye is traning me, so I'm getting better.." she shrunk a little bit trying to hide.
"See Remus? She's good at sorting them out, she can help with the one that you don't know the strength of." Siruis said pushing Tonks toward the stairs.
"Like a dance partner! Never been able to dance but, I can make the reference! Right?" she punched the air. "Probably one of the most common fears." she nodded, then chuckled. "Unique, ha! I was unique when I was eight, I'm original now." she laughed.
"Maybe I should blend in. Make it a game of hide and seek." she smiled.

"Uh huh," Sirius replied in an almost accusatory tone, "That's so what you meant." That Padfoot. Ignoring Sirius comment, Remus frowned a bit and said, "Perhaps, but I doubt that would happen at this point in my life." He didn't like these conversations. They always made him feel worse for knowing that he never would have someone to have, and eventually marry. While they thought they were trying to help him, and their hearts were in the right place, it did the opposite effect of what they tried, because he knew it was not the truth.
"Who wouldn't?" Remus joked, throwing Sirius a playful 'ha ha' face. Sirius then pouted and looked at him with the puppy dog face that never worked on him. "Why must you be mean Moony?" Remus chuckled. "That's my job," Remus replied.
"Fine, fine," Remus finally just gave in. It wouldn't be harmful to just let her help him with one job. And have one lunch with him. "I still think your unique. You don't see clumsy Metamorphagi as Aurors everyday, now do you?" Remus stated.
"If you do, I will call you Nymphadora forever," Remus threatened.

Tonks glared at her mother's cousin. Luckily she actually had aquired her mother's death glare, it came in handy when she needed something to go her way. "You know perfectly well that's what I meant and I will stand by it." She then turned on Lupin, "Nonsense, there is always hope. And where there's hope, there's cake." she smiled. Tonks had been on quite the cake kick lately and hadn't really had any.
Tonks started laughing uncontrollably, she had to cover her mouth it was so bad. She actually had no clue why she'd started a laughing fit. Then she started snorting, which only made her laughing worse.
"Original. Not unique, jeeze how much training am I going to have to give you in this matter?" she shook her head. Then stuck her tounge out, teasingly but only because she was trying to be funny.
"I might just have to have you killed in your bed.." she put her hands on her hips. "No one. No. One. Calls my Nymphadora."
